Refractive surgery is intended to reduce or eliminate the need for spectacles or contact lenses. Some patients may still need spectacles or contact lenses to refine their vision in certain situations.
These laser refractive surgical options use a computer-assisted laser to reshape the cornea, to correct for longsightedness, shortsightness, or astigmatism. Most refractive surgical procedures are performed as outpatient procedures, so you don't have to stay at the surgery centre overnight.
The most commonly performed refractive eye surgery is Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). When performing LASIK, the surgeon uses a computer to adjust the laser for your particular prescription. You will be asked to look at a target light for a short time while the laser sends pulses of light to painlessly reshape your cornea. The actual LASIK surgery usually takes less than five minutes.
Not all eyes are suitable for LASIK. For these eyes, there are other variations of laser eye surgery which may be suitable such as Intralase or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
The costs vary depending on which type of laser refractive surgery you are suitable for.
HCF EYECARE has been able to negotiate a saving for HCF Members of $500 for most forms of refractive surgery from several providers. Please contact us for further details.
Not all patients are suitable for laser refractive surgery. Some types of laser refractive surgery are more suited to certain eye conditions than others. For those not suitable for laser refractive surgery, there are non-laser, surgical vision correction procedures available to correct your vision such as “Implantable Lenses”.
To find out whether you are suitable for this type of vision correction, make an appointment to have your eyes assessed by an optometrist at any of our HCF EYECARE Centres. Our optometrists will also be able to provide you with a referral for further consultation with a refractive surgery eye specialist.
